The Government of India (Finance Ministry) named Madhabi Puri Buch as the Chairperson of the market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on February 28, Monday . She will be the first Woman to Head the capital market Regulator. she is appointed for a term of Three years.
Buch is a Former SEBI Whole Time Member, and had also been nominated to head a new technology committee set up by SEBI. Portfolios associated with surveillance, collective investment schemes, and investment management were handled by Buch during her tenure at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
Madhabi Puri Buch is replacing Ajay Tyagi, whose five-year tenure has come to an end. He is a 1984 batch IAS officer who was appointed as the chairman for SEBI on March 1, 2017, and then given a six-month extension. Again in August 2020, his tenure was extended by 18 months.
this would be the first time since 2002 that the government appointed a non-IAS individual to lead SEBI. G N Bajpai, the previous chairman of LIC, was appointed chairman of SEBI in April 2002. His term came to an end in February 2005. Since then, all four SEBI directors – M Damodaran, C B Bhave, U K Sinha, and Ajay Tyagi – have come from the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) cadre.
She did her schooling from Fort Convent, Mumbai (1971-1976) and Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi (1976-1983) and then she joined St. Stephen’s College, Delhi for her Bachelor’s Degree from 1983 to 1986. after her Bachelor’s, she joined Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (1986-1988) and completed Master of Business Administration (M.B.A),(PGDM).
Madhabi Puri Buch Started her Working Career in 1988 as a Social Worker for a NGO, Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) (1988-1989). after that she worked for ICICI Bank(1989-1992) as Project Finance Analyst.
in 1993, she moved to Chester, United Kingdom and worked as a Lecturer at West Cheshire College for 2 years (1993-1995). in 1995, she returned to India and joined ORG-MARG as Market Research Consultant(1995-1996).
Again in 1997, Madhabi Puri Buch Joined ICICI Bank and worked there for almost 12 years and worked at different positions and in different domains. she was the CEO from 1999 to 2002, Head of Product Development(2002-2003), Head of Operations(2004-2006) and Executive Director of ICICI Bank from 2006 to 2009. also, she was Head of Brand Marketing for 12 years(1997-2009). from 2009 to 2011, she was the CEO of ICICI Securities, ICICI Bank Group.
Later, she was the Head of Business Development at Greater Pacific Capital, Singapore from 2011 to 2013, from 2013 to 2017, she was the CEO of Agro Advisory Pvt Ltd. and a Non-Executive Director at Idea Cellular from 2011 to 2017. Besides, she has held non-executive director roles in several organisations, including Max Healthcare, Zansar Technologies, Innoven Capital, and Gabelhorn Investments.
Finally in 2017, she joined SEBI as a Whole Time Member.
she was among the corporate leaders who were holed up in a Mumbai hotel during the terror attack in November 2008.
