Indian Student Victimized in Russo-Ukraine War

Russia invaded Ukraine, one of its southwest neighbours, on February 24, 2022. It was a significant step forward in the hostilities between the two countries, which had been at odds since 2014. Following months of planning and international warnings, Russia invaded Ukraine last week and thousands of Indians, largely students found themselves trapped in a danger zone

Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, a 21-year-

old medical student from Karnataka, was killed in Russian shelling in Kharkiv, Ukraine, this morning while waiting in line for food.
Naveen was a medical student in his final year at Kharkiv National Medical University. He was from Haveri, Karnataka, and lived near a significant government building that was bombed by Russian troops said this Tuesday.

Naveen had called to his father, Shekar Gowda, not long before going out for food and cash, and told him that there was no food or water left in the bunker where he and a few other Karnataka residents had been hiding.

“A student coordinator in Kharkiv, Pooja Praharaj, talked to NDTV shortly after the student’s death -“He had only gone to get food. For others in the hostel, we provide food, but he stayed in a flat just behind the Governor’s House. He had been standing in the queue for an hour or two. Suddenly there was an air strike that blew up the Governor’s House and he was killed,” Ms Praharaj explained.

Shridharan Gopalakrishnan, a friend of Naveen’s, said he last saw him at 8.30 p.m. He did, however, give a different account of how he was killed.”Naveen was shot dead around 10.30 am Ukrainian time today. He was standing in the queue before a grocery shop when the Russian army fired at people. We have no information about his body. None of us was able to visit the hospital, probably where it is kept now,” Sridharan said.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi confirming the tragic news from Ukraine tweeted- “With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family,”

The Indian foreign secretary is calling the Russian and Ukrainian ambassadors to reinforce the demand that all Indian nationals be allowed to leave Ukraine safely and that their passage be guaranteed, according to the MEA spokesperson

Following the murder of the student, Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested any Indians stranded in Ukraine be evacuated by the Indian Air Force (IAF). According to them, the IAF will begin deploying multiple C-17 aircraft as part of “Operation Ganga” on Tuesday.
Indians are travelling by road to Ukraine’s borders with Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and other countries, where they are transported to airports for evacuation flights by Indian government personnel.
On Tuesday evening, Modi presided over a high-level discussion on the Ukraine issue, with an emphasis on the evacuation of Indian people from the conflict-torn country.

The worsened situation in Kharkiv is a “matter of significant concern,” according to official sources.”We had already raised the urgent demand of safe passage for Indian nationals, especially students, from Kharkiv and other war zones with the Russian and Ukrainian embassies,” they stated.

India has requested an immediate response from Russia and Ukraine.
