One episode was so convoluted and painful that the average Hogwarts student would need a magic spell just to understand what was going on and why any of us should care.

And so the next installment of the saga, The Secrets of Dumbledore, is probably best for harking back to the good old days, when Harry, Ron, and Hermione had to worry about Voldemort’s next appearance rather than a possible cancellation of the entire film series. Fell.

Officially, the new trailer of the film came out this week, and once again we are going back to the famous wizarding school. The Crimes of Grindelwald also featured some scenes set at Hogwarts, but it looks like the grand old place may play an even bigger role in the action this time around. There’s also a clip of Michael Gambon as Professor Albus Dumbledore, just to remind everyone that this was once a very successful film series.

The problem is, even if Hogwarts is back in the picture, we all know it won’t be a film about Quidditch, the inter-house rivalry, and the difficulties of navigating Platform 9 3/4 at King’s Cross Station.

It’s going to be a movie about Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander and his ever-expanding menagerie of magical creatures. It will be about Jude Law’s Dumbledore battling Mads Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald,

even though they once signed a blood pact promising to fight each other. This is going to be a movie that has us all asking ourselves time and again why Rowling had to borrow a plot line from the Star Wars prequels and the beloved Queenie in her desperate attempts to maintain her romance with Jacob Kowalski.

Had to turn to the dark side. (By the way, where is Tina, Queen’s sister and Newt’s future wife?)

But above all, this credence will be about the true identity of Barebone (Ezra Miller), who is most likely (if the movie’s title is to be believed) some mischievous Dumbledore back in his tangled youth.

It’s the same credence barebones that first introduced us to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) as the mopping son of an American anti-witchcraft campaigner, but by the end of the film what was called was revealed. Ambiguous,

a magician who neglects his magical ability due to psychological suffering. In Crime of Grindelwald we were told that Credence was actually Zoe Kravitz’s long-lost brother of Leta Lestrange, Corvus Lestrange V (no, we neither). But by the end of that movie he probably wasn’t even really it.

According to Grindelwald (once Colin Farrell, then Johnny Depp, now played by Mikkelsen), he was actually Albus’ long-lost brother Aurelius Dumbledore. But why should we trust someone who has swapped faces more times than Doctor Who?

The truth of Credence’s identity seems almost as entangled as it is originally in the Harry Potter books and movies, except for a whole lot less interesting, the apparently ever-shifting allegiance of Professor Snape to Alan Rickman.

The main issue here is that the Fantastic Beasts movies are prequels to events from young Harry’s school days, and if Credence’s true identity was that of someone important to the Potter fantasy, someone would have worked it out by now.

So why is Rowling so obsessed with her? Miller is doing an excellent job as barebones, but he’s been through more tonal outfit changes than Ron, who once went through shabby Christmas jumpers.

Let’s hope the actor himself knows who he’s going to be, and why it all matters. And let’s hope the rest of us figure it out before we lose the will to live and take a (figurative) dive-bomb off the tallest tower at Hogwarts.
